Teen found dead at James City Co. playground; 15-year-old charged with murder

JAMES CITY Co., Va. - Police are investigating a homicide that happened in the early morning hours Friday.

Around 1:45 a.m., officers were dispatched to the playground in Pocahontas Square in the 1900 block of Algonquin Trail in reference to a gun shot victim.

When they got to the scene they said they found a teenager suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was identified as 17-year-old Carlos Fermir Vanegas-Escobar and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe that the shooting happened sometime between 12:20 a.m., and 1:30 a.m.

Vanegas-Escobar was taken to the Tidewater Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

In November, a 15-year-old teen was been charged with murder in connection with this incident. The teen turned himself in to police at the Merrimac Center (Juvenile Detention) on November 23, police said.
