Two charged in Newport News shooting that left 21-year-old injured

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Two people were arrested in connection to a shooting on November 4 that left a man seriously injured.

According to police, around 11:20 a.m. that day, police responded to the 2400 block of Oak Avenue in reference to a shooting.

When officers arrived they found a 21-year-old man who had been shot multiple times. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for possible life-threatening injuries.

On November 9, 26-year-old Dereck Anthony Johnson and 21-year-old Deshazor Mykayla Sanford were both arrested.

Johnson, who is not known to the victim, has been charged with one count each burglary, possession of burglarious tools and malicious wounding.

Sanford, who is known to the victim, has been charged with one count each malicious wounding, burglary, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, maliciously shoot/throw into an occupied building, and reckless handling of a firearm.
