VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Two people have died after they were hit by a car in the 300 block of Independence Boulevard Thursday night.

Just after 9 p.m., dispatchers received a call for service for two pedestrians who were involved in a crash on Independence Boulevard near the intersection with Broad Street. The incident happened next to the Hyatt Place hotel right across the street from Pembroke Mall.

A preliminary investigation suggests that the pedestrians, a woman and a man, walked out into the street and were hit by a vehicle.

Officers tried to perform life-saving measures on the victims, but they both died from their injuries on scene.

Witnesses told News 3 the driver of the vehicle, which they described as a black Toyota SUV, was a 16-year-old.

We were also told the victims were hotel staff.

This is still an active scene and is being investigated by the Virginia Beach Police Department's Fatal Crash Team (FACT).

Southbound traffic on Independence Boulevard is currently being diverted down Broad Street while police investigate. Drivers are asked to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
