Woman arrested in connection with fatal Hampton hit-and-run

HAMPTON, Va. - A woman was arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that left a 24-year-old woman dead in Hampton in October 2019.

According to police, 31-year-old Shawnta Thompson Wilson was arrested and charged with felony hit and run, reckless driving and felony failure to report a crash involving a death.

On October 10, 2019, Newport News woman Kayla Hiegl was standing next to her disabled Chevrolet Cobalt when she was struck by a passing vehicle. When police arrived at the scene, they found her lying in the roadway. She was pronounced dead on scene.

The suspect vehicle was believed to be a red vehicle with front-end damage.

Wilson's court date has not been set.
