Woman injured in Newport News barricade situation, suspect in custody

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A Newport News man was arrested following an overnight barricade situation in the 200 block of Exeter Road, police said.

According to police, dispatch received a call for a shooting in the area at 11:58 p.m. Saturday. When officers arrived, they found a 47-year-old Newport News woman suffering from a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

The woman, who was taken to the hospital, told police a man known to her was responsible for the shooting and this is a domestic incident.

The offender, a 51-year-old Newport News man, remained inside the residence and a tactical situation was initiated at 12:09 a.m.

According to police, the man exited the residence at approximately 2:57 a.m. and was placed into custody.

On Monday he was identified as James Wood Jr.

Wood was charged with Malicious Wounding, Use of Firearm in Commission of a Felony, Brandishing, Assault, and Reckless Handling in reference to this incident.

The incident remains under investigation.
