HATTERAS ISLAND, N.C. - A worker on the "Jug Handle Bridge" project in Rodanthe on Hatteras Island was killed Monday morning, OBX Today reported.

Work at the project on Hatteras Island has been stopped while an investigation is underway, Flatiron Corp. spokesperson Michael Swenson told OBX Today. Flatiron Corp. is the main contractor on the project.

The worker was a Flatiron employee, Swenson said.

No details have been released on the nature of the incident.

“Our thoughts are with our employee’s family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time," Swenson told the outlet. “Out of respect for the family, we are not releasing the employee’s name.”

According to OBX Today, the $145 million bridge, which will carry NC 12 over the Pamlico Sound, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2021.
