Virginia Beach pizzeria tops off pizza orders with free toilet paper

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Hungry customers walked out of Windy City Pizza in Virginia Beach with some hot, fresh pizza, but also something extra -- toilet paper.

The owner, Mike Madsen, told News 3 he received a shipment of 500 toilet paper rolls this week. Since Governor Northam mandated mass gathering restrictions on crowds larger than 10 people, the dining room is closed.

The rolls would have sat in storage with no one using them. Madsen said with every large pizza or deep-dish pizza order, a customer will get a free roll.

Madsen said he got the idea of giving it away one night before falling asleep.

"I lay in bed at night, thinking of weird things, and this just popped into my head,” Madsen said. “I don't know why or where it came from. Everybody needs toilet paper, from what I hear, and so I was trying to find a creative way to give it away."

Sean Meckley walked out of the restaurant with a deep-dish pizza and a roll of toilet paper on top of the box. He agreed when asked if he could liken the roll to a toy inside of a kid’s meal.

"I had seen something on their Facebook site and was like, 'Oh I'm going to check this out. I wonder if they're still doing it,'” Meckley said. “It's kind of like the bonus, you know what I mean?”

Madsen said rolls will be given out until they run out. They are also handing out rolls at the restaurant’s Chesapeake location.

He urged customers to call ahead or place their orders on the Windy City Pizza website. Food can be brought out to their vehicle.

Windy City Pizza's two locations are at 1630 General Booth Boulevard in Virginia Beach and 480 Kempsville Road in Chesapeake.
