Teaching kids about renewable energy, that's the goal of one program on the Peninsula.

Today, New Horizons Regional Education Center cut the ribbon on a micro wind turbine to each students about wind energy.

Dominion Energy spokesperson Jeremy Slayton says offshore wind energy is still a fairly new industry in the US, with only two operational wind farms.

One of them is off the coast of Rhode Island, and the other is off the coast of Virginia Beach.

New Horizons Regional Education Center is one of two local schools to receive a 30-foot-tall micro wind turbine, solar panels and two 12-volt energy storage batteries.

The center partnered with Dominion Energy to give students hands-on lessons about wind energy and its benefits.

Electrical and Renewable Energy Instructor Rachael Cornelisom says the program helps students explore careers in electric, and some, by the end of the program, can earn a certification that would give them a leg up on other candidates.
