NORFOLK, Va. — On any given Sunday, Wednesday and Friday you will find Longshoreman Regina Darden serving up home cooked meals to people who live without shelter in Norfolk.

“We don’t call them homeless, homeless is a situation that ain’t who you are," says Darden.

Darden puts her money where her mouth is, she says, by donating 60% of her salary to fund her non-profit the H.O.P.E. Foundation Inc, an acronym for “Helping Others Pursue Excellence.”

With the help of volunteers, Darden provides safe overnight shelter, home-cooked mails, transportation passes and necessities to assist individuals down on their luck to get back on their feet again. They provide resources such as aid filing for birth certificates, social security cards, voting registration, Medicaid applications and helping veterans with benefits and claims.

So, what inspired Darden to take up this mission?

“Truly God, because it was not my passion," she said."I wanted to be a caterer and open up a restaurant, but God said we’re going to open up a shelter to feed the people on the streets.”

For those reasons and more, Regina Darden is our News 3 Everyday hero.
