HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - Many people spend 20 years establishing a career, but this week's Everyday Hero has devoted more than two decades helping to establish a variety of community outreach programs to aid the less fortunate.

Carol Owen is nearly 80 years young, and the folks at Joy Ministries who adore her, say she has the energy and devotion of a person half her age.

Over the years, Carol has taken on just about every task as a volunteer. But her primary focus is to support the outreach programs sponsored by Joy Ministries.

One of the major events she participates in is the Mother’s Day program. It’s a one-day event where single moms, military spouses, widows and moms with no support can gather and celebrate Motherhood. The event provides an upscale meal, fellowship and prizes.

The Mother’s Day celebration has impacted more than 30,000 moms and their children over the years on the holiday.

It’s just one of the outreach programs that support the community. The energy that Carol's devotes to the various programs inspire others to say it’s “Carol’s Calling."

So, for the 23 years and countless volunteer hours she's put in, News 3 and our partners at Southern Bank recognize Carol Owen as this week’s Everyday Hero. In addition, Southern Bank generously awarded Carol a $300 gift card recognizing her work in the community.
