NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State University Spartan Legion Marching Band is on the Road to Pasadena!

NSU welcomed Amy Wainscott, president of the Tournament of Roses, to campus Thursday. Wainscott presented NSU President Javaune Adams-Gaston and band director William Beathea, with the official tournament flag in the L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center.

This visit officially kicked off the Spartan Legion Marching Band's participation in the 2023 Tournament of Roses Parade. The Legion will be one of nine bands prominently featured in the parade, which will be held in Pasadena, California, on January 2, 2023.

"This is a big deal for Norfolk State, the Hampton Roads region, and the Commonwealth of Virginia. For NSU, it means the institution and the famous Legion will have a rare and valuable opportunity to showcase the 86-year-old HBCU, its gifted students, proficient faculty and staff, and other amenities. Their performance will highlight the historical journey of NSU, the growth and sophistication of Hampton Roads, and the beauty of the Commonwealth," the university said in an official statement.
