CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. — Two officers remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition after a suspect opened fire on them with a long gun during a domestic disturbance call at a Chesterfield home on Sunday afternoon.
Chesterfield Police said officers were called to the 12900 block of Gumfork Place at 4:40 p.m. after a woman reported that a man she knows fired shots inside the home during a domestic disturbance. The woman told police she had retreated to an upstairs bedroom and the suspect was attempting to get into the room.
When the uniformed officers entered the home, the suspect opened fire on them with a long gun, officials said. Two officers and a police canine were shot. The canine died as a result of his injuries. Both officers were transported to area hospitals and remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, was also injured in the incident and was taken to an area hospital.
Emergency radio communications offered a glimpse into the chaos as the situation unfolded along a cul-de-sac in the Clover Hill Farms neighborhood.
"Ambulance 207, you need to transfer one red patient. Still active gunfire unfolding. Reports of multiple officers that have been hit," a dispatcher said.
A neighbor who witnessed the situation and spoke on the condition of anonymity said he was about to grill on his patio when he saw officers running through backyards.
"Next thing I know, SWAT team is rolling out. They are going through the backyard, they're taking ladders from neighbors, trying to do what they need to do to get the situation under control," the neighbor said. "And we just heard pop, pop, pop — just about 30 minutes of an exchange of gunfire."
The man estimated that he heard at least 100 rounds of gunfire over about 30 minutes and witnessed an officer get shot.
"I definitely saw at least one officer injured," the neighbor said. "He left the house and had blood all over his arm and he looked like he was just trying to get away from the house. [He] made it about 100 yards before he collapsed and the EMT team just kind of converged on him and got him."
Authorities had urged people within a one-mile radius of the address to shelter in place, according to a 5:30 p.m. alert from the county's emergency notifications system. That alert was lifted around 6:35 p.m.
"There is no ongoing threat to the community at this time," police said.
Chesterfield, Richmond and Virginia State Police all responded to the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
Anyone with information about the incident was asked to call Chesterfield County Police at 804-748-1251 or Crime Solvers at 804-748-0660.
