NORFOLK, Va. – Former Norfolk State men’s basketball star Derrik Jamerson Jr. will continue his pro career in Argentina during the upcoming season. Now in his second year overseas, he will compete for Penarol Mar del Plata in the Argentine National Basketball League.

A native of Detroit, Jamerson spent his first professional season with UBSC Raiffeisen Graz of the Austrian Basketball Bundesliga last year. He averaged 13.5 points and 2.9 rebounds per game while shooting 49 percent from 3-point range.

Penarol went 11-16 overall last year in the National Basketball League (Liga Nacional de Básquet), the top-tier division of the Argentine basketball system.

As a senior at NSU in 2018-19, Jamerson earned second-team All-MEAC and second-team NABC All-District 15 honors. He was named the NSU Male Athlete of the Year after averaging 10.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. He shot 49.7 percent from 3-point range to lead the nation.

Jamerson also helped lead the Spartans to the MEAC regular season title at 14-2 and to an NIT first-round upset of Alabama his senior year. He spent two seasons at NSU after transferring from Owens Community College.

Jamerson was one of 15 former NSU players who competed professionally at some point last year. He will join Pendarvis Williams (Italy) and Jermaine Bishop (Germany), who will also play overseas this year.
