HIGH POINT. N.C. (HamptonPirates.com) – A pair of Jamal Wright free throws with seven seconds left gave the final margin as High Point defeated Hampton 88-85 on Thursday night.
Hampton (10-12, 5-4) went on a 19-5 run in the first half to take a 32-18 lead with just under six minutes left in the half on a pair of Dondre Griffin free throws. The Panthers closed the half on a 22-7 run to take a 40-39 lead into halftime on a pair of Denny Slay, II free throws with 20 seconds remaining.
In the second half, High Point (7-16, 4-6) went on a 19-7 run to push their lead to 63-50 on a 3-pointer by John-Michael Wright at the 12:44 mark. Hampton responded with a 17-4 stretch to tie the game at 67 on a 3-point play by Ben Stanley at the 8:33 mark.
Stanley tied the game with 2:30 left on a layup at 80. Hampton got to one twice, on a layup by Jermaine Marrow with 1:48 left and a 3-ball from Griffin with nine seconds left at 86-85. Wright hit his free throws for the final margin.
Stanley had 25 points and 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the year. Marrow added 20 points and eight assists, while Greg Heckstall scored 18 points.
Hampton visits Charleston Southern on Saturday for a 5:30 pm start in Charleston, S.C.
