The last time ODU and Maryland played each other was during the 1987-88 season, in a game the Terps claimed a 70-65 victory. Old Dominion's lone win came during the 1986-87 season by an 87-73 score. Entering the 2020-21 season, ODU head coach, Jeff Jones, ranks 24th among active coaches for most career Division I wins with 510.

Maryland received 15 votes in the Preseason Coaches Poll after ending last season nationally ranked No. 11 after compiling a 24-7 overall record with a 14-6 mark in league play, which was enough to clinch the Big Ten regular season title.

Terps head coach, Mark Turgeon, is in the midst of 10th season at the helm of the University of Maryland men's basketball team. Turgeon has recorded winning seasons in all nine years and four NCAA Tournaments appearances in the last five applicable seasons.
