Old Dominion, Virginia Wesleyan meet for first time in men's basketball

NORFOLK, Va. – In the last scheduled game of 2020 for the Monarchs, the Old Dominion men's basketball team (3-2, 0-0 C-USA) will host Division III Virginia Wesleyan (0-0, 0-0 ODAC) on Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 7:00 p.m. EST at Chartway Arena. Tuesday night's contest will stream for free at ODUSports.com.

Tuesday night marks the first ever regular season meeting between these two schools.

Old Dominion has won three of its last four contests, most recently coming off a 66-62 victory over Northeastern at Chartway Arena on Sunday afternoon. Kalu Ezikpe led the way against the Huskies, turning in a 17-point (6-8 FG, 1-1 3PT, 4-4 FT), eight-rebound, four-block, two-steal and one-assist performance in 26 minutes of work. Also in double figures for ODU on Sunday were Joe Reece (11 points) and Malik Curry (10 points). For the contest, Old Dominion shot 52.0% (26-50) from the floor.

The Monarchs have been led by a balanced scoring attack so far this season as four players are currently averaging double figures: Malik Curry (15.6 ppg), Kalu Ezikpe (12.4 ppg), Joe Reece (11.4 ppg) and A.J. Oliver II (10.6 ppg). Ezikpe leads the team in rebounding, hauling down 7.8 boards per contest, while Curry leads the squad in assists, dishing out 5.2 assists per outing.

Tuesday night will mark the first game of the 2020-21 season for Virginia Wesleyan. The Marlins are coming off a 23-5 record during the 2019-20 season that had VWU ranked in Top-20 all year.

The 2020-21 campaign marks Dave Macedo's 21st season at the helm of the Virginia Wesleyan men's basketball program. He took the Marlins to the NCAA Final Four in 2005-06 (DIII National Champions), 2006-07 and 2014-15, while adding another Elite 8 appearance in 2011-12 and additional Sweet 16 seasons in 2010-11, 2012-13 and 2013-14.
