Second half run leads Longwood over Hampton men's hoops

FARMVILLE, Va. (HamptonPirates.com) – A 9-0 run over a 2:35 span of the second half proved to be the difference as Longwood defeated Hampton 76-68 on Saturday night.

Hampton jumped out to an early 14-7 lead on a pair of Greg Heckstall free throws with 13:49 left. Longwood then ripped off a 13-2 run to lead 20-16 at the 10:03 mark on a 3-pointer by Lorenzo Phillips.

The Lancers then saw Hampton respond to lead 25-24 after a 3-ball by Heckstall with six minutes left. Longwood got the lead back to 36-30 with a jumper by Jaylon Wilson and Hampton cut it in half on a 3-ball by Chris Shelton as the Pirates trailed 36-33 at half.

Longwood held a 48-40 lead on a pair of Wilson free throws at the 15:13 mark, but saw that lead vanish on the heels of a Ben Stanley dunk with 11:42 left to even the game at 48. Three-pointers by Jashaun Smith, DeShaun Wade and Wilson pushed the hosts up 57-48

Stanley and Jermaine Marrow paced Hampton (111-5, 6-7) with 21 points each, while Stanley had a team-high 10 rebounds and Marrow dished out six assists.

Hampton now hosts Gardner-Webb on Thursday night at 7 pm.
