WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - A group of students are planning to file a lawsuit against William & Mary over the elimination of the women's varsity gymnastics, volleyball and swimming teams at the school.

Arthur Bryant of Bailey Glasser LLP is representing the students in the lawsuit. He sent William & Mary President Dr. Katharine Rowe a letter informing her of the lawsuit on Wednesday, asking she respond no later than September 30.

According to Bryant's letter, in 1991, William & Mary announced that it was eliminating its varsity women’s basketball team, which he says "was a blatant violation of Title IX."

Earlier this month, William & Mary announced it would discontinue seven of its 23 varsity sports programs, citing the desire to achieve fiscal stability while maintaining competitiveness.
