CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (VirginiaSports.com) – Dean and Markel Families Head Basketball Coach Tony Bennett announced Wednesday (Nov. 11) the signing of guard Taine Murray (Auckland, New Zealand/Rosmini College) to a National Letter of Intent with the Cavaliers.

The 6-5, 200-pound Murray is a standout high school player for Rosmini College, helping the team to an 82-14 record from 2017-19. In 2018-19, he led Rosmini to a national runner-up finish. Murray, who earned team MVP honors, tallied a career-high 49 points in a win over Auckland Grammar School. Rosmini’s 2019-20 high school season was canceled due to COVID-19.
Murray competed for the Auckland Huskies of the New Zealand National Basketball League in 2019-20, averaging 18 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists. Murray, who shot 43.5 percent from 3-point range, tallied 35 points, including 7 of 11 from 3-point range, five rebounds and four steals in a win over Manawatu.
Murray played two games for the New Zealand Tall Blacks in 2019-20 and was selected for the 2020 FIBA Asia Cup team.
“We are excited to add Taine into the Virginia men’s basketball family,” Bennett said. “Taine is a skilled and versatile guard, and he and his parents value a degree from the University of Virginia. We look forward to him joining our program next fall.”
