William & Mary's Yuri Covington named CAA men's basketball Rookie of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. (TribeAthletics.com) – William & Mary men's basketball freshman Yuri Covington was named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Week, the league announced on Monday.

Following a 16-day lay-off, Covington helped the Tribe to a 2-1 week, averaging 12.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He joins fellow freshman Connor Kochera in earning CAA Rookie of the Week honors this season. On the year, Covington ranks 19th in the CAA in scoring.

In the Tribe's thrilling comeback win at George Washington on Dec. 14, Covington scored a career-high 16 points, including 14 in the second half and OT. He connected on six of his final seven shots and scored W&M's final four points in regulation and first four points in OT as the Tribe rallied from a 19-point deficit.Covington added four assists and five rebounds against the Colonials. In the Tribe's win at Hampton, he tallied 12 points, hitting 2-of-3 from 3-point range.

Covington closed out the week with 10 points vs. High Point, shooting 4-of-8 from the floor and 2-of-4 from 3-point range.

Along with Covington's rookie of the week award, senior Luke Loewe was named CAA's honor roll for his strong performance last week. Loewe averaged 19 points, 3.7 rebounds, two assists and two steals per game. Highlighting the week, he scored 17 of his game-high 24 points in the second half and OT to lead W&M to a come-from-behind win at George Washington, including the game-winning lay-up with 12.3 seconds remaining in extra time to cap a 19-point comeback.

The Tribe returns to action with a trip to No. 16 Virginia on Tuesday, Dec. 22. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and the game will be televised on the ACC Network.
