NORFOLK, Va. — Heavy rain caused flooding on a number of streets across Norfolk Saturday evening as a flash flood warning remained in effect for parts of Hampton Roads.
News 3 Meteorologist Derrah Getter said more than 4 inches of rain had already fallen in some areas, with another 3 to 5 inches possible.
A flash flood warning was issued for portions of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach through 9 p.m. Saturday. The warning also included Accomack County through 10:15 p.m.
The National Weather Service said heavy rainfall was producing flash flooding in urban areas, streets, highways and underpasses, including locations with poor drainage.
Getter urged people to avoid urban areas prone to flooding and underpasses as additional heavy rain moves through the region.
Drivers are reminded to never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Even shallow, moving water can be dangerous and can conceal hazards beneath the surface.
