CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WTVR) Around 4 p.m. a student was shot near Virginia State University campus in Chesterfield County.

VSU spokesperson Thomas Reed confirmed that a student was slightly wounded in the ankle around by a gun shot.

The victim was taken to Southside Regional Medical Center, said Lt. Jason Elmore.

VSU has not notified the staff or students for a lock down at this time.

Witnesses tell CBS 6 reporter Mark Holmberg that they saw at least one, maybe more running in front of Virginia State University Federal Credit Union when the shots were fired.

Another witness says that somewhere between 7-10 shots were fired in rapid secession and that they saw two men running from the scene, one of them limping.

Police are widening the crime scene due to the number of shell casings found in the street across from the credit union.

It is unknown if the credit union is part of the crime scene.
