A major merger could be in the works.
US Airways has filed paperwork to begin a takeover of American Airlines.
But if the two airlines become one, what would it look like?
It wanted to use the bankruptcy process to pretty much destroy the employee contracts in place here.
pilots, ground workers, and flight attendants are on board with what amounts to a hostile takeover bid from US Air. The proposal would still eliminate jobs, but less than half of what American proposes in bankruptcy.
It’s going to save 6,000 jobs here in Texas and Oklahoma as compared to management’s proposal that would eradicate 13,000 jobs and continue to outsource more of our flying.
This agreement puts our flight attendants in a far better position than any proposal American Airlines management has ever made.
According to the pilot’s union, the merged carrier would keep the American Airlines name and its Fort Worth headquarters, and the combined carriers would compete with Delta and United. American calls the promises “non-binding” and says their timing is no conicidence.
These statements do not, in any way, alter the company’s commitment to pursue our business plan or our focus of moving steadily through the court-supervised restructuring process to create a profitable, growing industry leader.
US Air formalized its takeover bid in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Saturday. Some passengers are unsure what to make of the move on American.
“I’d say I’d like them to stay on and recover, rather than be gobbled up by another company. But I understand that a lot of jobs are on the line.”
