An inmate who escaped from the Southampton County Jail early Saturday morning was captured at approximately 9:15 Sunday morning after he was found hiding in a farm vehicle at a farm off Pope Station road.
47-year-old Sherman Charles Hix resisted arrest but no one was injured.
Hix had been assigned as a trustee at the jail. When he was let out of his cell to work in the kitchen Saturday morning he escaped out the back of the kitchen.
He was in jail for Burglary/Grand Larceny
Units from Southampton Sheriff’s Office; Virginia State Police; Virginia Department of Corrections; Isle of Wight Sheriff’s Office; Town of Courtland Police; Virginia Game Commission and Franklin Police Department assisted with the manhunt.
