On Saturday, April 28th from 11:00am-2:00pm, The Newport News Sheriff’s Office and Stealth Shredding, Inc. will offer a Free Shred Day at the Farmer’s Market on Jefferson Avenue at 29th Street. This event is FREE and Open to the Public.
The Sheriff’s Office says this is a way to help protect citizens from being victimized by identity theft
Destroying personal identifying documents is one way to keep a thief from using your good name to conduct unscrupulous business. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), nine-million Americans have their identities stolen each year. What do the thieves do with those identities? The can rent an apartment, obtain a credit card, and establish utility accounts in the victim’s names, etc. The victim may not discover the theft until a debt collector comes knocking.
Coinciding with the Newport News Sheriff’s Office shredding event is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The DEA and NNPD will have three drop-off locations in Newport News. One is at the same place (10am-2pm) as the Sheriff’s Office shredding event. Citizens can take advantage of one location for two important disposals. The drug take back is to safely get rid of unused and expired medications. Medications that are not disposed of properly pollute water supplies and can cause harm to children, pets, and others.
