Crews put out flames in an Oceanfront motel on Wednesday night. The desk clerk at the Sandpiper Inn says that a guest might have started the fire on purpose.

The clerk told investigators the fire that broke out around 7:30 Wednesday night was not an accident.

She tells NewsChannel 3 the man who was staying in the room didn’t seem to be "all there." She said he threatened something bad would happen if he didn't get to talk to management.

Shortly after his threats, he packed his bags and took off.

The clerk says just three minutes after he hit the road, thick smoke was coming out of the room.

"I got the shakes right now because I feel like it could have been my room. I could have been in there; it's kind of scary right now knowing that it could have been you,” says another motel guest.

The clerk says the guest had been staying there just under two weeks. She gave all of his information to police.
