Norfolk drivers see drop in gas prices, gap in pricing between stations

Gas is down a quarter in a month. Davis Harris, a Norfolk driver, is filling up everything he owns.

"Save a dollar or a penny, it helps out," says Harris. "I think this is about the cheapest you're going to find it."

The $3.59 he paid is six cents less than the average in Hampton Roads.

NewsChannel 3 found there's a big difference in price, even if there's a short distance between the two stations.

A lot of it has to do with competition, a bunch of stations together usually lowers prices in both spots.

But not on Little Creek.

Wawa was practically giving it away, well maybe not. But at $3.49, people enjoyed the savings.

"It was nice, I mean because the last time I filled up it was 3.89," says Kathy Hales

But just across the intersection, the Shell Gas Station was a dime more.

"You're talking ten cents a gallon is two dollars for a fill up; it's not a big deal," says Doug Stauffer

Sounds like a sore loser in the battle for bargain gas.

"It's nice; it's three bucks, but you know it's a little bit, every little bit helps," says Hales.

Two stations on Hampton Blvd. are in the low 3.40s. Drivers flooded the pumps, even if it meant having to wait.

"A lot of volume so they make their money, a little price war back and forth between Wawa and Dodge's, so it's a good place to come," says Louis Gillus of Norfolk.

"I certainly look for the cheapest gas wherever I can find it but mostly it's between this and the one across the street is where I generally get my gas," says Carol Tucker of Hampton.

They don't know how much longer the trend will last, but for now, as long as it doesn't spike back up, these drivers are happy.

"Feels a lot better, you get more gas for your money. You know everything else is going up, so you appreciate gas prices lowering themselves down," said Gillus.
