Like many in the gay community, David Miller is furious North Carolina passed Amendment One, which bans gay marriage.
Miller says, “It should be our right to get married. It is as simple as that. We should be able to get married."
But instead of just sulking about it, he is working with other gay rights activists, channeling their energy on planning this year's OBX Pride Fest.
They hope to spread the word that the gay community isn’t going anywhere.
Miller adds, “This is not the end, it’s just the beginning. It’s even more important now, that we come together, that people come to North Carolina to spend their money here, letting people know there’s more of a reason to come together to fight this in the future.”
OBX Pride Fest is a weekend festival tailored for the gay community.
Last year’s event brought controversy to the Outer Banks.
Organizers also say it brought 15,000 visitors and no problems.
And David doesn’t think this year will be any different even though Amendment One passed.
David believes the only way to change people’s minds about gay rights is to have more events like Pride Fest, letting people know more about the gay community.
David adds, “We are your neighbors, your brothers and sisters, your families. It may happen a little slow in North Carolina, but we will get there.”
