Virginians conned out of over 11 million dollars online

Posted

Virginians lost more than 11 million dollars to internet scams last year according to the Internet Crime Complaint Center.

As a nation, we lost nearly half a billion dollars to online scams.

The most popular scam appears to be crooks posing as the FBI to defraud victims. That scam is followed by identity theft.

The FBI says a fast-growing trend is romance scams. A victim looking for love online gets duped by criminals posing as a love interest.

Virginia is sixth on list in terms of money lost behind California who accounts for 18 percent of money scammed on the internet in the country.
