KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Time magazine raised eyebrows with its controversial breastfeeding cover, and now Newsweek’s May 21 issue is certain to do the same.
The cover shows a picture of Barack Obama and the headline under it reads “The First Gay President.”
Last week, President Obama said in an interview with ABC that “it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.”
President Obama, who previously said his views on the issue were “evolving,” said Wednesday that he supports same-sex marriage.
The Newsweek cover story was written by Andrew Sullivan, a popular–and openly gay–political blogger. The magazine also gives the commander-in-chief a rainbow halo.
“The point of the gay-rights movement, after all, is not about helping people be gay. It is about creating the space for people to be themselves. This has been Obama’s life’s work,” Sullivan wrote in a blog earlier this week. His cover story is not yet online.
Meanwhile, the President is trying to explain his decision to his strong base of support among African-Americans. Polls show they are more likely than whites to oppose same sex marriage. That opposition has softened in recent years, but in Baltimore, Pastor Emmett Burns is so upset, he publicly withdrew his support for President Obama Sunday and says the issue will cost Obama the election.
“People I know, people come up to me are saying they don’t support this. They don’t like this. They are disappointed with the president and they plan to stay home… I don’t plan to vote for Romney for sure. And right now I plan to stay home.”
