Virginia Beach police chased a teen robbery suspect they say jumped and beat up a 15-year-old with autism Monday afternoon. It happened near Landstown High School.
"Three cop cars showed up with a K-9 unit and started searching our front yard and our backyard," said Helena Bowers. "And I happened to look outside and they were all over the backyard with rifles and what not."
Bowers says she then heard five gun shots. Police say they did not shoot at the suspect, but aren't sure if the shots came from him.
"They did stay for an hour looking for the gun," said Bowers.
Police listed 19-year-old Nathaniel Mitchell as a suspect in yesterday's robbery.
A group of four came up to the teen with autism as he walked through a cut through and demanded money.
When he wouldn't give it up, investigators say the group threw the special needs teen to the ground and started kicking him before taking off with his backpack.
A neighbor who didn't want to be identified saw the attack and called 911.
"A boy came running out of the field, had a bloody nose and a bloody shirt," he said."I don't know how they could do it or why they do it."
George Evans is the victim's neighbor. Every day he watches from his porch to make sure the teen gets home okay.
"He seems like a nice kid," Evans said.
The victim had to be taken to the hospital. Evans has been told by the family that he's badly hurt but he is getting better.
