Today is National Peace Officers Memorial Day which also happens to fall during National Police Week.

On Thursday, 38 Norfolk police officers were remembered in a special ceremony outside of City Hall.

These men and women all lost their lives in the line of duty.

Some of them died more than 100 years ago.

Stanley Hurst and his family came out today to honor his nephew.

Kit Hurst died back in 1972 when he was shot while serving a search warrant.

His family says the pain of losing him never gets any easier.

"Occasionally bad things do happen and what we do is turn out and honor them, like we are doing today. And hope they hear us,” says Hurst.

Next week will mark 40 years since Kit's death. The most recent fallen officer that was honored was killed in 2006.
