USNA freshmen climb lard-covered monument

Posted

Things got pretty wild in Annapolis Tuesday.

The freshman class at the US Naval Academy slipped and scrambled up the Herndon Monument on campus.

But the 21 foot high monument was first slathered with 50 pounds of lard.

The rite of passage took just over two hours and 10 minutes.

19-year-old Andrew Craig, from Tulsa, was the one to knock off the symbolic plebe hat - a little paper cup - and replace it with a midshipman's hat.

Many fellow freshmen helped Craig.
