Today, Naval Station Norfolk held a wreath laying ceremony commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Midway.

The ceremony honored the sacrifices made by the men who fought in the battle and emphasizes the engagement’s significance in American history.

Dr. Timothy J. Orr, Assistant Professor of History at Old Dominion University, was the guest speaker at the event. He is writing a biography on Captain Norman J. “Dusty” Kleiss. During the Battle of Midway, Lieutenant Junior Grade Kleiss was a dive bomber with Scouting Squadron Six and was the only American pilot to score three direct hits.
