New details have emerged about a North Carolina program that sterilized thousands of people against their will.

A bill to compensate those survivors is now one step closer to Governor Bev Perdue's desk.

Yesterday, North Carolina's state house approved the bill.

It's now on its way to the Senate.

The bill would pay each person 50, 000 dollars.

Over 7,000 people were sterilized in the eugenics program between 1929 and 1974.

The state says about 100 of those people are still living.
