Police have arrested 45-year-old James Hawkins.

They say he shot a man who was walking through Wadsworth Shores Military Housing Tuesday evening in Virginia Beach.

NewsChannel 3 has learned the victim is a friend of Hawkins’ wife.

Though Police aren’t talking about what led to the shooting, court documents show Hawkins and his wife have been having problems.

Hawkins’ wife filed for a restraining order a couple of weeks ago. She says she was directed by her command to file for it, because her estranged husband kept making threatening calls to her.

In her affidavit, she also expresses her concern about her husband’s guaranteed access to military housing.

She added she’s fearful for the safety of her two young children.

Today a Security Guard blocked the entrance of the complex, checking ID’s.

Kriss Hoffman has lived in Wadsworth Shores for two years. He says he’s shocked something like this happened in his neighborhood.

Hoffman adds, “It’s all military so we all have the same careers. We all are usually stationed around here. And I’ve never heard anything bad about the neighborhood."

Hawkins has been charged with aggravated malicious wounding, a gun charge, and violating a protective order.
