Update: The National Weather Service has upgraded its heat advisory to a heat warning for Hampton until 8 p.m. The city will be opening a cooling site at West Hampton Community Center, 1638 Briarfield Rd. The site will be open from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday.
Hampton Roads Ecumenical Lodgings and Provisions (HELP) has been out in its mobile cooling center providing water, Gatorade, fruit, snacks and cheese. HELP will be out tomorrow as well.
The city of Hampton would like to remind the community that during times of high temperatures, citizens without air-conditioning may be affected. These citizens may visit their local Public Library or Community Center to take advantage of the air-conditioned facilities, according to city officials.
It is advised to drink plenty of water fluids and, if possible, stay in an air-conditioned building, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, check on relatives and neighbors and provide shelter and fresh water for pets.
The Fire Department/Emergency Medical System (Fire/EMS) personnel will be monitoring any increases in call volume related to heat illnesses during the next two days.
Hampton Roads Ecumenical Lodging & Provisions (HELP) will be driving vans throughout the city today, distributing bottled water and other cooling items.
Libraries and Community Centers will be open to citizens wishing to take a break in an air-conditioned building.
