A blazing hot day means Geneva King is in the pool.

She's lucky it's Friday though, because the pool at the Norfolk Fitness and Wellness Center is open today, but every Wednesday it's closed.

That means Geneva and her mom have to find other activities to stay cool.

Aquatics Director Dan Jones says closing the pools is necessary.

“Mainly for maintenance, we have to be able to super chlorinate and there's a lot of maintenance items we can do when a pool is closed each week,” says Dan.

But maintenance aside, Dan says there simply isn't enough money right now to keep all the pools open seven days a week.

“Right now, we're not even funded to be open on those days and our staff is all over the city so we have just enough lifeguards to staff our swimming pools and beaches,” says Dan.

So the Kings have adjusted their schedule to accommodate the closures.

“We pretty much keep up with the schedule, so we know it's closed on Wednesdays, but we would love for it to be open more,” says Lisa King.
