The Coke vs. soda vs. pop debate continues – however this time, we have some actual data to support the debate.
Edwin Chen, a data scientist for Twitter, geo-tagged tweets from around the country to determine how people refer to a soft drink.
On the map, you can see people across the South use the word Coke. Soda is most popular across the Northeast, the mid-Atlantic and parts of the West.
Pop wins the mid-West with the exception of parts of Wisconsin and near the Illinois-Missouri border where Coke is the winner.
Chen also compiled tweets across the world to show how we refer to soft drinks. The most popular term for soft drink worldwide is Coke. Pop is most prevalent in the United States and Canada. Some countries in the UK, New Zealand and Maine also use the words “fizzy” when referring to a soft drink (not shown on map).
