Officials say the new Highway 12 Bridge in the Outer Banks will be longer and taller than the original.

Hurricane Irene destroyed the bridge south of the Oregon Inlet on the way to Mirlo Beach.

A temporary bridge was quickly built to bridge the gaps.

The bridge is expected to cost around 100 million dollars and the Department of Transportation is currently working that cost into their budget.

The hurricane also delayed work on the Bonner Bridge.

That is expected to start early next year.
