CHESAPEAKE – The Gilmerton Bridge (Route 13/Military Highway) will close to vehicular traffic for several weekends during July and August in preparation for the lift span float-in scheduled for later this summer.

The closures are necessary for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) contract crews to perform work associated with the Gilmerton Bridge Replacement Project, scheduled for substantial completion in fall 2013.

The Gilmerton Bridge is closed weeknights, Sunday through Thursday, closing each night at 8 p.m. and opening each morning by 5 a.m.  This weekend, the bridge will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 20, and reopen at 5a.m. on Monday, June 23.

The Gilmerton Bridge Replacement Project Weekend Closure Plan

Friday, July 20, at 8 p.m. through Monday, July 23, at 5 a.m.

Friday, August 3, at 8 p.m.  through Monday, August 6, at 5 a.m.

Friday, August 17, at 8 p.m.  through Monday, August 20, at 5 a.m.

Mariners should expect delays on Sunday, July 22, from 5 a.m. to noon, as tugs and barges positioned within the channel will not allow passage of marine vessels through the Gilmerton Bridge.

Motorists are encouraged to use the Interstate 64 High Rise Bridge as an alternate route during the overnight bridge closures. The Interstate 264 Downtown Tunnel and Berkley Bridge are also alternate routes.

The Gilmerton Bridge Replacement project will provide a new lift span bridge over the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River and replace the existing double-leaf bascule bridge that was constructed in 1938.  For more information about the project, visit www.GilmertonBridge.org
