Newport News, Va. – An inmate at the Newport News City Jail hung himself on Tuesday.
According to a release from the Newport News Sheriff’s Office, deputies found the male inmate hanging in his cell and immediately removed what appeared to be a bed sheet from around his neck and started performing CPR until paramedics arrived on the scene and took over.
Paramedics were still performing CPR when they left the jail in transport to a local hospital where the man was later pronounced deceased.
The death investigation is being conducted by the Newport News Police Department while the Newport News Sheriff’s Office conducts an internal investigation.
