Police and US Marshals hit the streets of Newport News today looking for the Police Department's wanted criminals.

This is part of Operation Heat Wave, a sweep Newport News Police have been doing for years.

This is where they post the pictures of the wanted criminals in the Daily Press, hoping the public will help police find them.

Topping the most wanted list is Tyrek Allen, who investigators say is responsible for a crime spree in Newport News and in Hampton.

They say he is involved in three shootings and in one case a man was killed.

Newport News Police Chief James Fox says, “ The heat is on to get him off the streets, we need him off the street. We need the public's help before somebody else gets shot and killed. "

And Newport News Chief James Fox is confident the public will take action and give investigators the tip they need to catch these criminals.

Fox adds, “I know  that people get excited about this. They want to make their community safe. They give us phone calls and it works. "
