According to Battalion Chief Jack Crandell, a fire broke out at a townhouse in the 2200 block of Royal Haven Crescent in Virginia Beach.

They say lightning hit a tree, jumped to the attic of a townhouse and caused light/moderate damage to the attic.

A neighbor saw the house on fire after it had been hit by lightning.

He kicked the door in and made sure the family's two Chesapeake Bay Retrievers got out safely. The dogs ran out of the home and now they are missing.

The fire was put out in 10 minutes, but the search for the dogs has taken much longer.

Crews say there was also smoke damage in the townhouse.

No injuries have been reported.
