Newport News home condemned after kitchen fire

Newport News, Va. – A Newport News home has been condemned after an early morning kitchen fire caused heavy damage.

 The Newport News Fire Department received a report of a structure fire in the 7200 Block of Abraham Court (in the Briarfield section of the City near the Hampton City line) at 5:02 this morning.

The first unit to arrive found heavy smoke issuing form the front door.

The home was occupied by two adults and three children. All occupants were able to evacuate the home without injury.

The blaze began from cooking in the kitchen.

Damage is estimated at $10,000 with the most significant damage located in the kitchen and smoke damage throughout the remainder of the structure.

The home was condemned due to damage and the Red Cross is assisting the family.

There were no reported injuries to civilians or firefighters.
