Norfolk Police say 62-year-old Dale Querino was killed Sunday in the Ocean View section of the city.

Cristel Hain of the 1400 block of Kingston Avenue has been charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony in connection to Querino's death.

On Sunday Hain's neighbor, Stephen Shifflett, said Hain came running over to his yard while he was mowing and asked to use the phone.

Shifflett listened as Hain told 911 dispatchers that she had shot an unknown man inside her house.

However, Querino's landlord says Querino and Hain knew each other and had been in a relationship ever since meeting at alcohol meetings in Chesapeake nearly a year ago.

"She started bringing him home from the meetings; that’s the way he met her and they just went from there," Emma Tyree explained.

Tyree had rented a room to Querino on and off since the early 1990s and considered him a part of the family.

"He treated everybody right – you know the people who bring me home from church, I would introduce him as my white son. He was that type of person," Tyree said.

Tyree says Hain and Querino would spend a lot of time together whether it was on the porch talking or at the beach.

"They like the beach. They both like the beach and he would take his chair and go down to the beach and meet her," Tyree commented.

Tyree admits she didn't like Hain very much and made no bones about that to Querino.

"I said ‘Dale, I don’t think she’s the right lady for you’ and he said 'Yeah, my mom said the same thing,'" Tyree said.

Tyree last saw Hain and Querino Saturday morning and now she's left grieving the man she considered one of her sons.

"I’m sorry that he’s gone and had to go in that way and I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to him," Tyree said now she wants answers from Hain. "Why did you do this to a man that loved you so much?"

Cristel Hain remains in jail without bond.
