A Newport News mom is facing charges after police found her four children home alone.
On August 3, 2012, Newport News police responded to the 1000 block of Garden Drive after receiving a report about children left unattended at home.
It happened around 2:30 p.m. Police say a woman was walking by the apartment and saw a door slightly open. She heard crying inside the home, and notified the apartment complex management team who then called the police.
Police responded, and found four children in the home - a 6-month-old; a 1-year-old; a 3-year-old; and a 7-year-old.
At about 2:55 p.m. the mother and guardian of the children, 24-year-old Shante Payne, of the 1000 block of Garden Drive, returned home. Newport News police arrested and charged Payne, and the children were put into the custody of relatives. CPS was also notified.
The children did not suffer injuries, according to police.
