According to Newport News police, a 4-year-old child was shot in the leg on Thursday night.
Police say at about 8:20 p.m. they responded to the 600 block of Ridley Circle. There were reports of gunshots in the area.
A woman told officers that she was outside of a home and heard what she described as several young men fighting. She says she heard gunshots then heard her 4-year-old daughter scream inside of the home.
She went to check on the child and discovered what appeared to be a gunshot wound to her leg.
She was taken to a hospital by medics with what appears to be non-life threatening injuries.
There is no suspect information or description at this time.
