A rumor is floating around Twitter aying the SEAL who shot Osama bin Laden was killed in action.

NewsChannel 3 has learned that this is a complete hoax.

Here's what the tweet says: “Rest in peace Todd Jones. The Navy SEAL that killed Osama bin Laden died in battle today.”

Needless to say the tweet quickly spread across the Internet; more than 10,000 people re-tweeted the message.

But again, it's all a hoax.

How to spot a phony SEAL

The first problem: The name of the SEAL who killed bin Laden has never actually been released.

Also, the Navy Times reports there is no SEAL named Todd Jones in the SEAL database.

The al-Qaeda leader was killed on May 2, 2011 when Virginia Beach-based SEAL Team Six raided his Pakistani compound.

The operation was code named “Operation Neptune Spear.”

After his body was verified, bin Laden was buried at sea on the USS Carl Vinson.
