The NYPD is investigating the theft of seven motorcycles from a police parking lot where they were being stored as evidence of an alleged motorcycle and gun trafficking ring.
The bikes were among some 60 high-end motorcycles that authorities seized in July. Thirty-three people were charged in the smuggling scheme and remain behind bars.
The New York Times says the bikes were determined to be missing from a Bronx NYPD parking lot on Aug. 24.
Police spokesman Paul Browne said the lot is fenced in but not locked. He noted that the batteries had been removed from the bikes and the wheels locked to make them harder to steal.
Police said the crime ring swiped a total of $500,000 worth of motorcycles off the streets.
